Regenerative farming - mimicking nature, revitalising the land

After working on the land for a few years using traditional farming methods, seeing extreme weather conditions, and what an endless cycle of chemical spraying and fallow was doing to the environment - we knew there had to be a better way.

This led to us looking to work with the land, not against it. Weemala is now run on the principles of regenerative agriculture, which is a set of practices that builds organic matter back into the soil, effectively storing more water, increasing productivity, and drawing more carbon out of the atmosphere.

Meet the Growers

In 2015 in search of a small weekender, Mick and Deb stumbled across Weemala Farm. After falling in love with the beauty of the land and with some help from their accommodating and supportive neighbours, it wasn't long until the pair became accidental farmers. In the last few years, lead farmer Mick has gone from inner-city dweller to driving tractors, growing crops, raising 100% grass-fed cattle, and like all farmers has become rather obsessive about the weather. It should be noted that he is less enamored with Debs little family of Alpacas - declaring they have no real purpose - they have agreed to disagree.

After learning more about the environment, Mick and Deb became set on shifting their practices towards regenerative agriculture. This set of farming principles and practices seeks to rehabilitate the entire ecosystem of the farm.

Accidental Farmers

Originally from the North East of England, Mick moved to Australia in 1990 and never looked back. He was known for his love of the Sydney Swans, Middlebrough FC and city life generally, so it took many by surprise that he traded his corporate career for raising cows, but he wouldn't have it any other way.

Farming has truly become a passion for Mick and Deb, with animal welfare and leaving the land in a better condition than when he found it becoming key to what Weemala stands for.
